(Live Interview)
Singer/songwriter Spring is the
archetype of an independent musician. Working hard
to develop her craft, as well as promote her
career, she has earned recognition both for a
tireless work ethic, as well as an angelic voice
and the inspirational quality of her original
music. Two albums, The Spring Thing and
Transforming, and consistent touring have
gained the New Jersey resident critical
recognition, radio airplay and growing popularity
among her fans.
While in the midst of recording for her new
album, and recently back from a successful tour of
Florida, Chorus and Verse caught up with
Spring to ask about her approach to music, her
style of performing and recording, creativity and
the relationship with her fans.
The reviews about your
music and your shows often talk about the mood that
you create, both with your music and your voice.
Can you describe how you want fans to feel during
your performances and how you want them to walk
away talking about your performance?
Actually, the last thing on my mind is about
making someone feel a certain way. Every person is
a unique human being with their own life
experiences. And it is based on these experiences
that they will interpret my music. The same song
that makes one person feel depressed, might make
another feel comforted that they are not alone. I
would go crazy trying to please everyone.
However, I do enjoy getting compliments on my
voice and talents. That always feels nice for
people to walk away from a show saying that they
were moved or touched in some way that makes their
life a little better. I guess that is what I would
really want is for people to leave feeling like
they got a gift for their soul. Perhaps a new way
of looking at something.
The only expectation I have, is of myself, to
put every bit of sincerity behind each note and
lyric that I sing. I enter every performance with
an offering of my experience for them to take and
do with what is right for them. That focus and
freedom is what probably creates the mood that has
been described in reviews.

Spring is Good
For The Soul
(Newspaper Article)
As a journalist for the ShoreViews'
Center Section, Spring was one the of the artists
that was always fun to write about. I wrote about
how her career began when her mom presented her
with a dusty old guitar she dug out of the attic.
At the time of my first article on Spring, The
Spring Thing, (her debut CD) was still being
promoted. She was preparing to play at that year's
Clearwater Festival, which was being held then at
Sandy Hook. The following year, I had an article
about Spring appear in Night & Day (which had a
brief run as Shoreview'sCenter section), while she
was preparing to perform once again at the
Clearwater Festival. Always a very spiritual
person, Spring's struggle with her own identity
came to the surface upon the release of My
Little Artist. I talked about this CD, while
writing for FRED'S. This was the album she needed
to get off her chest.
Influenced by Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Colvin and
Sheryl Crow, Spring describes her music as
"inspirational pop-rock." She currently spends her
winters touring Florida and her summers and falls
touring New Jersey and tri-state area. Spring is
returning this year to perform at the Monmouth
County Friends of Clearwater Festival at Sunset
Park Asbury Park. She will be performing on the
Family Stage on Sunday August 22nd. She expects to
incorporate some of her environmental songs, such
as "The Earth & Sky" from The Spring Thing into
her set. She respects the members of the Clearwater
Organization because of "how hard they work to keep
our waters clean and protect the environment. They
put in many hours with no recognition."
When not performing, Spring will be at a table
displaying her jewelry. Spring makes beaded jewelry
made of Czech glass and Swarovski and Austrian
Crystals. This is a form of artistic expression
that is very relaxing. Her necklaces and earrings
became popular as people saw her wearing them.
Spring is very excited about her new CD,
Transforming. Released this year, Spring describes
it as punchier. Utilizing a real drummer in David
Ross, Al-Vis assisted with the guitar and bass
tracks. Besides lead and background vocals, Spring
played acoustic guitar, piano and keyboards. Four
of the songs are full band productions. She
performs two covers ("Over the Rainbow" and
"Amazing Grace") The latter song has been a staple
at her shows for many years. She feels her vocals
are stronger because she has been constantly
performing live.
Spring says that she is also enjoying herself
more. "I'm more grounded and relaxed with what I am
doing. I have developed as a piano player, and as a
musician in general. I am more in the moment now,
than I was before." Before her appearance at the
Clearwater Festival, Spring will be performing in
front of the Savory Cafe in Ocean Grove on Sat.
August 14th. After the Festival, she will be at the
Center For Powerful Living in Montvale on Sunday,
August 29th, with an afternoon concert. For more
information about Spring or her upcoming
performances, log on to www. SpringMusic.net.
With Spring it has never been about the
interview but the conversations. anytime I have
ever talked to Spring, something positive always
came out of what she said. While I was interviewing
her, I was becoming inspired not to give up on my
own ventures. As Spring puts it, " You won't
experience it if you give up." She states through
song on her first album "the whole point is that
things work out and I'm doing okay from day to
day." Well, Spring is doing more than okay. She has
persevered. She has made it through her own
personal struggles, while continuing to inspire
others. And she continues to move forward.

THE SPRING
THING
"Twelve of the most emotionally intense,
beautifully sung songs I have ever heard! Spring is
a fresh young talent from New Jersey who writes
passionately about life's frustrations and
disappointments. On her first CD, The Spring Thing,
she sings about examining her insecurities ("If I
Told You"), the aftermath of a love affair
("Pieces", "Beneath Her Smile") trying to find her
place in the world "Trapped", "Style Of Life", "One
Deep Breath")- with a crystal clarity and
sensitivity that will touch your heart. She also
has a gift for writing catchy and addictive
melodies. In fact, a frequent complaint among her
fans is that we find it hard to take her CD off and
play anything else, her music is so addictive! If
you are looking for a serious, meaningful look into
someone's (maybe yours?) inner passions and fears,
then look no further." -Fan's review
